Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with
scenic natural splendour & varied natural resources. Dotted with lakes,
Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India. The most
prominent of the lakes is Naini Lake ringed by hills. Nainital has a
varied topography. Some of the important places in the district are
Nainital, Haldwani, Kaladhungi, Ramnagar, Bhowali, Ramgarh, Bhimtal.
Mukteshwar, Sattal & Naukuchiatal. Nainital’s unending expense of scenic
beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring & pristine Mother
Nature.
Mr. P. Barron, a European merchant and an enthusiastic hunter from Rosa,
near Shahjahanpur, founded "NAINITAL" in the year 1841. Mr. P. Barron was
the first European who took great fancy to this land. Moved by the beauty
of the sparkling lake he wrote: "It is by far the best site I have
witnessed in the course of a 1,500 miles trek in the Himalayas." It is
very less is known about the history of Nainital. The name "NAINI" is
derived from a temple to the goddess 'Naini Devi" built on the upper edge
of the lake and was destroyed by the landslip of 1880. It was subsequently
replaced by a modern structure. The word "Naini" means 'Eyes' and 'Tal'
means 'Lake'.

Transport :
Air :
Nearest airport is at Pantnagar (Dist. Udam Singh Nagar), 71km. At the
time of writing flights are not operational.
Rail :
Connected by broadgauge with Delhi & Kolkatta, Kathgodam is the nearest
railhead 35km away. From Lalkaun(60km), trains are available for Agra &
Lucknow. Reservation can be made at Nainital from Reservation Office,
Tallital. A special Shatabdi Express operates from Delhi to Kathgodam
every Friday & Sunday in summer from April to July.
Road :
Nainital is connected by good roads to all the major National & State
Highways. There is a regular half an hour service to Kathgodam. The deluxe
& ordinary services connect Delhi at regular intervals.

Naini Lake :
The nucleus of Nainital's exquisite beauty is beautiful lake .In the day
,mirrored in its waters stand seven proud hills,dotted with pretty
cottages and villas.
Hanuman Garhi :
This place is of religious importance. Situated at a height of 1951 meters
this place was established by Baba Neem Kiroli. A very beautiful Hanuman
mandir is at the top. From Hanuman Garhi watching the Sunset is very
soothing. You can walk down from Nainital to Hanuman Garhi.
Mukteshwar :
This is 52 km from Nainital and 6 km from the resort. It is at the height
of 2286 m and famous for IVRI campus, thickly wooded forests and majestic
view of the Himalaya, near by in the stone hole of Chauli ki Jali
dedicated to Lord Shiva where people come to pray for children. The
Lohakot at Mukteshwar is an extension of Gagar mountain range.
Mukteshwar's wild life sanctuary is a division of Corbett National Park .
From Mukteshwar Himalaya ranging can be seen. On moon light nights seeing
the sparkling town of Almora.
Jeolikote :
This is at the height of 1219 m. It famous as a health centre, for its
butterflies and for the production of honey, mushrooms and fruits
including strawberries and leechi.
Bhimtal :
This is 46 km from the Resort and 22 km from Nainital at the height of
1371 m. The lake with an island.
Sattal :
This is 45 km from the Resort and 21 km from Nainital. It is famous for a
peaceful cluster of lakes.
Naukuhcital :
This is 50 km from the Resort and 26 km from Nainital. It is famous for
clean and alluring lake which has nine corners.
Observatory :
The clear skies over Nainital prompted the government to setup an
observatory here. The observatory has one of the most advance telescopes
in India. These two lakes are 72 km far from Nainital and situated at a
distance of 1 km from one another. Both has the surface area of about 2 km
each. Near lokhamtal is a temple dedicated to Lokham, where a fair is held
on Baisakhi Poornima.
Horse Riding :
Horse riding is another important attraction for tourists in Nainital .
Horses can be hired at Barapatthar . Several tourist use horses as their
transport mode to visit the different peaks of Nainital.Horse Riding is
now strictly prohibited inside the Nainital town.

Manas Khand
Nainital is referred to in the 'Manas Khand' of the 'Skanda Purana' as the
Tri-Rishi-Sarovar,the lake of the three sages ,Atri,Pulastya and Pulaha
who were reputed to have arrived here on a penitential pilgrimage, and,
finding no water to quench their thirst dug a hole and siphoned water into
it from Mansarovar the sacred lake in Tibet.
